What Artists Say

I thought there were many things about the art world that still felt mysterious. I would see other artists being successful, and I'm like, okay, how did they get into that museum show? Why am I not in that show? It just felt like there were mysteries that I wasn't solving. But I came to really trust that I can tell my secrets. [In Netvvrk] I belong to a small group that has met every other Friday for a couple of years now. That group tells each other everything. In the art world, that's rare. Paddy, I can't thank you enough. I have four galleries right now.

Decoding the cryptic behavior of arts professionals

Decoding the cryptic behavior of arts professionals

I can be confident around people that I know, but can you be confident when the director of the Guggenheim walks into your studio? I was on Instagram, and I sent this curator art consultant out of Denver a message saying I thought her post was cool. She looked at my Instagram and said, 'Can you send me available works?' I made a viewing room, sent it to her within 24 hours, and she was like, 'Wow, this is great. So professional.' That came from my accountability group in Netvvrk. I'm packing up a show for Paris next week. I have every little piece of the puzzle ready to go.

I've had some pretty big exhibitions that have led to working with galleries that I'm really happy to be with now. Right now, I have my first museum solo show at the Wiregrass Museum in Alabama. I was introduced to the museum through another Netvvrk member. Being exposed to the right way to do exhibition proposals—I didn't even know that was actually a thing. Now I'll look up who the curator is and write: 'I was researching this artist whose paintings I absolutely love. I see that they showed at your institution. Are you open to taking submissions?' I understand how to crack a door open on my own.
